Home Bargains urgently recalls popular snack and warns ‘do not eat’

A popular brand of crisps has been recalled as they are a potential health risk.

Food safety officials are asking anyone who has bought a packet of Lay’s Sour Cream & Dill Crisps from Home Bargains to return them immediately.

‘If you have bought this product, do not eat it,’ the Food Standards Agency said yesterday.

In a recall notice, Home Bargains also told shoppers ‘do not consume’ the American potato snack as they contain ‘undeclared allergens’.

A recall doesn’t mean a product is off the shelves for good – customers are just asked to return them.

Who is affected?

If you haven’t bought a 125g pack of Lay’s Sour Cream & Dill Crisps from Home Bargains, you don’t have anything to worry about.

If you have, and the packet has a best before date of up to and including October 31, though, take them back for a refund.

No other Lay’s products, flavours, sizes or variety packs have been recalled.

Why are they recalled?

The FSA said they could contain allergens not listed as ingredients.

They include milk and wheat, which pose a health risk to anyone allergic or intolerant to dairy or gluten, respectively.

Around 20million people in the UK are allergic to dairy – symptoms include uncomfortable gas, bloating, nausea, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.

Different conditions can make someone allergic to gluten, a protein common in wheat, barley and rye.

People with coeliac disease, an autoimmune disorder that sees the body turn on itself and attack the small intestine if exposed to gluten, are warned to avoid the crisps.

The FSA did not specify if anyone has been sickened from eating the recalled crisps.

Doritos issued a similar recall last month after discovering some Chilli Heatwave packs were stuffed with Tangy Cheese flavoured crisps.

The spicy flavour does not contain milk, while the cheesy one does, the FSA said.
