Hot May day leads to strong inaugural regional bass fishing around Chicago
Lily pads and hard bottoms did it for Brother Rice Boat 1 Thursday in the Wolf Lake regional. Tom Hall and Joe Bowen won with five largemouth bass weighing 9.28 pounds.
“Buzzbaits right in the lily pads, lily pad stems and hard bottoms,” coach Jim Hall said.
The launch was crowded before takeoff Thursday at the Wolf Lake regional.

“We had three keepers by 9:15 and our limit by 10:30,” Bowen said.
Reavis finished second (7.67) in coach Tony del Alcazar’s final year. Daniel Gomez, casting Texas-rigged Senkos, caught big bass (2.86) to lead Oak Forest to third.

Hillcrest’s Hamilton Morales and Terrell McGee took Hillcrest to fourth (6.74) in its first year bass fishing. St. Laurence (6.7) and Andrew Boat 2 (6.07) rounded out the top six advancing.

A hot sunny May day drew big fish at other sectionals, too.
Mycah Letuchy’s big bass (4 pounds, 15 ounces) led Stevenson Boat 2 to first (15.14) at Busse Main. Stevenson’s Boat 1 finished second. . . . Mason Nicolai’s big bass (3.38) led Woodstock North Boat 2 to win (14.47) the Chain O’Lakes North, where all 24 boats weighed bass. Woodstock’s Boat 1 finished third. . . . New Trier went 1-2 (8-10, 8-6) at Skokie Lagoons. Daniel D’altorio’s big bass (3-2) led Glenbrook South to fourth. . . . Sandburg Boat 2 took first (13.3 pounds) and Andrius Stankus’ big bass, a 5.4 largemouth, led Sandburg Boat 1 to fourth at the Cal Sag. . . . At Shabbona Lake, St. Charles qualified both teams with Boat 2 winning (14.6) and Boat 1 fifth (10). DeKalb’s Cole Stoffa caught big bass (4.78). . . . Zachery Morgan’s 3.4-pound big bass led Fenwick to win at Busse South (12-10), while Timothy Christian went 2-3 (both 9 pounds) to advance. . . . Reed-Custer won (14-4) the Heidecke regional while Connor Bogard’s 4-3 bass powered Morris to second. . . . In Chicago-area regionals, Braidwood Lake was postponed by winds to Monday, May 19, and we’re missing Tampier results.
