Hot topic, cool tips as police and community meet at Mission Hills park
Senior lead officers from the Los Angeles Police Department Mission Community Police Station area got together with the community for a meet-and-greet on a very warm (hot for some) on Tuesday at their annual National Night Out event at Brand Park in Mission Hills.
The event was one of dozens of National Night Out gatherings throughout Los Angeles County this week.
In Mission Hills, residents were able to ask officers specific questions about crimes and scams in the area and receive answers about being pro-active about personal safety issues at home, in their own neighborhood, and anywhere else out in public.

The late afternoon-early evening block party also included display booths by community groups, like the Mission Hills Neighborhood Council, appearances by local elected officials, music by DJ Bobby Arias, raffle prizes, free school supplies, and free food and refreshments.
National Night Out, the first Tuesday in August — Aug. 4 this year — brings law enforcement officers, emergency personnel and the public together to learn about local neighborhood crime, crime prevention, safety tips around home and creating neighborhood watch groups while having fun in a relaxed, non-confrontational atmosphere.
Alternatively, individual neighborhoods may put together their own block party — inviting their senior lead police officers — to discuss how to keep their areas safer from crime. Some cities, including San Fernando, hold their National Night Out event in early October.
