Former WGN TV sports anchor Jarrett Payton is expected to be announced Monday as Mike Mulligan’s replacement on The Score’s morning show, the Sun-Times has learned. The station is planning an announcement for 3 p.m., and the show, with co-host David Haugh, is expected to start Aug. 31.
Payton spent more than 10 years at WGN before announcing his departure July 30 to spend more time with his family. Switching his working hours from nights to mornings should accommodate his plan.
The Score fired Mulligan, a longtime morning co-host and former Sun-Timesman, on Friday, along with midday co-host Marshall Harris. The midday show now will feature only Leila Rahimi and Mark Grote.
The 45-year-old son of Bears legend Walter Payton has a long relationship with The Score, appearing on shows throughout its lineup. His father also appeared on the station and revealed in February 1999 that he had a rare liver disease. He died Nov. 1 that year.
Jarrett was an anchor/reporter for WGN since May 2015. Most recently, he was a co-anchor on the station’s nightly half-hour “GN Sports show.” Previously, he co-hosted “SportsFeed” on the defunct CLTV.
The Chicago-area native played running back at Miami and had a brief pro career. He played for the Titans in 2005 and later for the Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.
