Man, 18, allegedly fled after fatally gunning down father in Oak Lawn, police say

An 18-year-old man is facing charges he gunned down his father earlier this week in southwest suburban Oak Lawn.

The deadly shooting happened Monday in the 10400 block of South Austin Avenue, where patrol officers responded about 10:45 p.m. for a report of a person shot. Inside a home there police found Ayed Mdanat, 50, suffering from gunshot wounds, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Mdanat was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later, at 11:18 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy Tuesday determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.

A large-caliber firearm was recovered at the scene.

Responding officers quickly identified the offender as the victim’s son, 18-year-old Sami
Mdanat, who had fled the area on foot. Officers established an outer perimeter, and the 18-year-old Mdanat was located a short time later near the scene, police said.

Detectives executed several search warrants, which resulted in murder charges for Mdanat, who was scheduled for a detention hearing in Bridgeview.

Details from the hearing were not immediately available.
