Man charged in 2021 River North homicide

A man has been charged in the 2021 fatal shooting of a man in River North, according to Chicago police.

Rashawn Ward, 31, faces a charge of first-degree murder and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon for allegedly possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, police said. He was arrested Tuesday.

The 33-year-old was standing next to his vehicle about 3:50 a.m. in the 800 block of North Orleans Street Sept. 18, 2021 when Ward, inside a blue SUV, is alleged to have opened fire, police said. The man, shot once in the chest, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died. He was later identified as Royal Shorts of Hammond, Ind.

Ward is due back in court for a detention hearing Thursday, police said.
