A man has been found dead with a gunshot wound behind the wheel of a car that crashed near a Sussex village on Bank Holiday Monday.

The man, in his 20s, was found inside the vehicle which had careened off the A286 near Midhurst, 12 miles north of Chichester, at about 6am.

He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Investigators are trying to establish if the car was moving when the fatal shot was fired or if the dead man was driving at the time.

A source close to the investigation said a shotgun was seen inside the locked car.

The police said: ‘Emergency services were called to a report of a car having left the carriageway of the A286 near Midhurst at around 6am on Monday, May 6.
