California’s largest wildfire of the year is burning on Santa Rosa Island, part of Channel Islands National Park.
The fire, which was reported on the morning of Friday, May 15, had burned 10,029 acres (15 square miles) as of Sunday evening, federal wildfire officials said.
The island has been closed to visitors, and all non-fire staff were evacuated on Sunday, the National Park Service said.
High winds on Sunday hampered efforts to bring more firefighters to the island, about 30 miles off the coast near Santa Barbara.
The Santa Rosa Island Fire is more than twice the size of California’s second-biggest 2026 fire, which burned 4,176 acres last month in Riverside County. There have been seven fires this year bigger than 1,000 acres.
