Los Angeles police have arrested more than 100 people suspected of burglarizing homes or businesses in the last 30 days, Mayor Karen Bass announced on Tuesday, May 12.
Some of those arrested, Bass said, were connected with international organized crime, including one person tied to a South American group linked to more than 25 residential burglaries, 14 of which were in the San Fernando Valley. Another person was linked to more than 30 burglaries across the city, Bass said.
Bass said the arrests emphasized a need to hire more police officers across the city, but also said that violent crimes, property crimes and homicides were down around Los Angeles. Overall, burglaries are down 30% compared to the same time last year, Bass’ office said.
“The statistics are great, but what is important is how people feel in their neighborhoods,” she said. “And if you live in a neighborhood that has been burglarized or you know of someone, the statistics are nice, but what is important is that you actually feel safe.”
The announcement comes about a month after Bass announced increased police patrols in the San Fernando Valley following reports of break-ins in Valley Village, Valley Glen, Sherman Oaks and Grenada Hills.
In one week in April, there were at least six break-ins reported across the Valley.
