Police in suburban Oak Park shot and killed a man Sunday after a struggle over his gun during a traffic stop, the police department said.
An Oak Park police officer found a gun while he patted down the driver of a black SUV during a traffic stop just after 9 p.m. near the intersection of Harrison Street and Austin Boulevard, Oak Park police said in a statement posted on social media. The driver Christian Wallace, 38, and the officer struggled over control of the gun, and Wallace regained control of it, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
The officer then fired shots, striking Wallace, Oak Park police said.
Officers gave first aid until Wallace was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, officials said. He was pronounced dead around 10 p.m.
Illinois State Police are investigating.
