A pilot suffered serious injuries on Thursday, Aug. 27, when his airplane stalled and crashed in a field east of Big Bear Airport, authorities said.
The yellow plane tipped over onto its nose.
The pilot was flown to a hospital by helicopter. His name and condition had not been disclosed as of early Friday afternoon. The airplane is registered to a resident of Mohave Valley, Arizona, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The Steen Skybolt experimental aircraft departed Big Bear Airport and attempted to return to land, but the engine stalled, the FAA said.
San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies responded to the plane crash around 6:20 p.m. and found it with only the pilot aboard, nose down in a field.
No other damage was reported on the ground, the Sheriff’s Department said.
The airplane received its airworthiness certificate in 2004, according to FAA records.
The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating the crash.
