A mysterious crater which is so deep you cannot see the bottom of it has has suddenly appeared on the Russia-Ukraine border.

The dramatic sinkhole, dubbed ‘a portal to the underworld’, was found in a cornfield between Russia and occupied Ukraine in Gukovo, Rostov region.

Although locals first suspected it was caused by a collapsed mine shat, the town’s administration said there were no working tunnels beneath the crater.

Footage shows the giant hole surrounded by hay, but it is too deep to see how deep it goes – and what it is at the bottom of it.

A local man filmed the strange hole soon after it appeared saying he had been ordered to fill it in.

The man who filmed the video said he was ordered to fill the hole in.

Peering inside it he said: ‘It’s so deep it’s scary to look at. You can’t see how deep it is.’

One commenter dubbed it the ‘portal to the underworld’ while another called it a ‘screw alien base’.

Another social media theory was that it was caused by a giant Russian missile landing above a mineshaft.

Yet later reports were rushed out saying the task had been completed and the deep crater – too deep to see the bottom – had been completely filled in.

A witness said: ‘It just came out of nowhere. I don’t even know how deep it is.

‘It just collapsed underground.”

Whatever the cause of the hole close to annexed-by-Putin Luhansk region, the Russian authorities moved earth – literally – to rapidly fill it in.
