Prep roundup: Serra pounds Palo Alto at Boras Classic, improves to 11-1

No. 8 Serra 14, Palo Alto 1 (5 innings) 

After Serra and Palo Alto won earlier in the day, they met on Monday night in Sacramento for a spot in Wednesday’s Boras Classic semifinals.

It was no contest.

Ian Armstrong ended this one with a grand slam over the left-field fence in the bottom of the fifth as Serra scored seven in the frame to prevail by mercy rule.

Justin Sechler had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs and Lucas Schumaker doubled and had three RBIs to help lead Serra to its 11th victory in 12 games this season.

The Padres also got superb pitching from senior left-hander Mason Wehmeyer, who struck out nine and walked none.

Coco Vonderhaar drove in Palo Alto’s only run, in the first inning.

The Vikings fell to 4-7. 

Serra 5, Whitney-Rocklin 1

Trailing in the sixth inning, Serra erupted for five runs to turn back Whitney in the first round of the Boras Classic.

An error pushed across Serra’s first two runs. Ian Josephson and Davis Minton followed with run-scoring singles and Lucas Schumaker drove in one with a double.

Braden Agosta pitched 4 ⅓ innings for the Padres, allowing one run. Minton worked the final 2 ⅔ innings for the victory.

Palo Alto 5, Central Catholic-Modesto 1

Palo Alto won its Boras Classic opener behind home runs from Coco Vonderhaar and Charlie Bates, two hits from Zach Thom and nine strikeouts over four innings from pitcher Vincent Braga.

The Vikings scored three in the third for a 3-0 lead, stretched the margin to 4-1 in the fifth and closed the scoring with a run in the sixth.

Brophy College Prep 1, No. 1 Valley Christian 0

Valley Christian lost its opening-round game at the Bishop Gorman tournament in Las Vegas as Phoenix powerhouse Brophy pushed across the only run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Valley Christian finished with five hits – two by Rocco Muccilli – and ace Quinten Marsh pitched all six innings for the San Jose school. Marsh allowed two hits and struck out 10 but walked six.

Trey Markham’s two-out single to left knocked in Brophy’s run.

Valley has dropped two of its past three to fall to 10-2. Borphy improved to 12-3.

Bishop Gorman-Las Vegas 7, Bishop O’Dowd 1

After Horacio Bucio knocked in O’Dowd’s only run to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fifth inning, tournament host Gorman scored five in the bottom half of the frame to put the game away.

Ben Skiles finished with two hits for O’Dowd. Ryan Hunter had two hits, drove in two and scored twice for Gorman.

O’Dowd is 8-3-1. Gorman improved to 5-4. 

Oakland Tech 5, Skyline 4 (8 innings)

Tied 1-1 after seven innings, visiting Oakland Tech scored four in the top of the eighth and then held on as Skyline rallied to within one in the bottom half.

Lee Tshosane, Issac Estow, Gyasi Rapier, Rass Robinson, Hayden Burton and Mike Martin each had two hits for Tech, which improved to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in the Oakland Athletic League’s Premiere Division.

Robinson homered, Burton tripled and Rapier doubled.

Skyline fell to 0-2, 0-1.

Softball

No. 2 Archbishop Mitty 13, Monterey 3 (6 innings)

Olivia Anderson had two hits, including a double, and drove in three and Cara Edwards, Lindsey Miller and Corri Hicks each knocked in two runs as Mitty won at home in a game called because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Hicks had a home run and Megan Sutton added two doubles and an RBI. 

Mitty scored three in the first and three in the third to take a 6-2 lead. It ended the game with seven in the sixth as the Monarchs improved to 8-1.

Monterey is 7-3.

Mountain View 3, Valley Christian 1

Caroline Kim had two hits, including a home run, and Allison Marcelino struck out seven while pitching a complete game as Mountain View prevailed at home over Valley Christian in a nonleague game.

Prep roundup: Valley Christian baseball held to one hit, somehow wins 6-2

Savannah Hernandez had three hits for Valley, which fell to 7-6.

Mountain View is 5-5.

Capuchino 3, Carlmont 2

Avery Motroni had a home run and a double and Liz Do knocked in a run as Capuchino scored two in the sixth to erase a one-run deficit and beat visiting Carlmont in a Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division game. 

Lola Sierra pitched a complete game for Capuchino, striking out nine, as the Mustangs improved to 5-3, 3-0.

Carlmont is 3-5, 3-1.
