Primary school ‘on lockdown’ after armed police swarm estate

Armed police have arrived at an estate in Middlesborough as a nearby primary school was put into lockdown.

Several police vans, as well as armed officers, are currently in the Stockton estate in the Portrack area and have been seen entering multiple homes.

Nearby Tilery Primary School issued an alert to parents, saying: ‘Due to an ongoing police incident on the Portrack estate, if your child is coming to school, can you please take them to the main hall.’

Shortly before 11am the school shared an updated statement, saying: ‘THANK YOU to all parents, carers and families for your patience and understanding this morning.

‘The safety of our children, staff and community is our highest priority and we followed our safeguarding procedures to ensure this.

‘Children are now back in classes and we will keep you updated on the situation.’

Both Cleveland and Durham Police forces are in attendance, with crime scene investigation vans and sniffer dogs also seen at the scene.

A police statement said: ‘Police are currently carrying out a series of warrants in the Stockton area as part of an ongoing operation.

‘Armed and unarmed officers from Durham Constabulary and Cleveland Police are involved in the activity as well as specialist search officers and dog section.

‘A cordon remains in place at these addresses.

Police activity has been spotted on a number of streets in the Portrack area, including St Ann’s Terrace (which is where Tilery Primary School is located), Burtonport Walk, Eastport Road, and Hertford Road.
