Although not nearly intense or as scrutinized as years ago, the fall months bring college visits and commitments in basketball recruiting.
While it’s been well documented the recruiting road for this year’s senior class is a little bumpy with so much uncertainty in college basketball, there are still commitments being made and visits to be taken.
Here is a roundup of where recruiting stands for several prospects in the Class of 2027 and some other player movement.
- Alex Sirbu of Buffalo Grove has been one of the biggest risers in the class over the past two seasons. The much-improved 6-8 big man with plenty of mid-major interest committed to Columbia in the Ivy League earlier this month.
- There is a lot to still sort out in the recruitment of Benet’s Ed Stasys, who has several schools still poking around while he has lined up visits with Belmont, Illinois State, Harvard, Yale and George Washington.
- Former Warren star Jaxson Davis, the reigning Sun-Times Player of the Year who is headed to Monarch Academy in Kansas City, just completed an official visit to Creighton this past weekend. He has September visits on the books for Ohio State, Minnesota and Iowa. He’s headed to Michigan State the first weekend of October. Marquette remains involved as a visit date is still in the works.
- Crane’s Jamier Montgomery shined this summer and had a flood of mid-major options when the July evaluation period wrapped up. Kent State landed the 6-1 scoring guard who is set for a big senior season.
- There are few players in the senior class who have been more productive over the course of their career than Wheaton Academy’s Hayden Schroeder, who averaged 22 points and nine rebounds a game last season. The versatile 6-7 big man with over a dozen offers visited Elon last month and has three more official visits set. Schroeder is headed to Penn this weekend and will follow it up with trips to Illinois State in early September and Toledo in late September.
- Another player in the class is on the move. KJ Miller, a top 20 prospect in the senior class, has left Plainfield East for Mt. Zion Prep in Maryland. The 6-6 Miller put up impressive numbers the past two seasons, including 11.3 points a game as a sophomore and followed it up with 19.7 points, five rebounds and 4.4 assists a game this past season as a junior. Miller made a whopping 177 three-pointers the past two seasons combined.
New arrivals
The Public League has been bolstered by the arrival of talented guard Mikey Woods, who is transferring to Perspectives after playing last season at Don Bosco Prep. The 6-1 senior, who first made an impression as a freshman three years ago at St. Francis De Sales, will instantly move into a center-stage role in the city.
Coach Marc Howard’s Romeoville roster has been revamped, thanks to the arrival of several transfers.
The three biggest are senior guard Donavyn Simmons, who arrives from Joliet Catholic, Normal U-High’s Owen Kirby and 6-10 junior Lameck Hassan, who moved in from Kentucky.
Simmons has flown under the radar in the Class of 2027. He averaged 15 points, five rebounds and four assists a game last year for the Hilltoppers.
The 6-4 Kirby has been a double-figure scorer at U-High for two years while burying 79 three-pointers for a 27-win team last season, while Hassan is a super intriguing big man and legitimate Division I prospect.
