Analilia Mejia, the Democratic nominee in the special election for New Jersey’s 11th congressional district, is teaming up with her Democratic rival, former U.S. Representative Tom Malinowski. Mejia won 29% of the primary votes in February; Malinowski won 27.5%.
The two vied for their party’s nomination to fill the seat left by Rep. Mikie Sherrill when she resigned to become the governor of New Jersey. Mejia now faces Republican nominee Joe Hathaway, Mayor of Randolph, New Jersey.
As seen in the video below with Mejia, Malinowski said: “We are united as Democrats in common cause. We are in the greatest crisis for our democracy probably in the history of this country.”
The former Congressman added: “Whatever small differences might divide Democrats as a party are absolutely insignificant compared to the issues that divide us and all patriotic Americans from Donald Trump.”
Mejia added: “We were once rivals. Now we’re united to defeat MAGA extremism. We can’t afford another vote for Trump in Congress.”
[NOTE: Hathaway is not a MAGA extremist. He has pushed back on a number of issues that President Trump and most Republicans are not in favor of, including ICE reforms (no to masks, yes to body-cams) and subsidies in the Affordable Care Act.]
Hathaway said, if elected, he would want to join the Problem Solvers Caucus, the bipartisan group created in January 2017, which is co-chaired by Reps. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). The election will be held on Thursday, April 16.
