A high school was evacuated after staff received a ‘threatening email’ this afternoon – before police declared the area safe.

Matthew Moss High School in Rochdale posted online just before 1pm today and said ‘all learners and staff’ were safe.

In a full statement on Twitter it said: ‘Matthew Moss High School have received a threatening message by email and have evacuated the school as a precaution.

‘All learners and staff are safe and the police are in attendance.

‘Please do not travel to the school at this time to allow police and staff to manage the situation.’

It then later posted to say: ‘Police and staff have ensured that the school is safe and all staff and learners are returning to the building.’

One parent posted online and said: ‘I haven’t heard anything but my daughter just rang me in a panic saying they are being evacuated. ‘

The nature of the message hasn’t been revealed and there are no further details.

Pupils at the school were evacuated to nearby Springfield Park as a result.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: ‘At around 12 noon today (Monday 29 April), officers received reports of a threat being made towards a school on Matthew Moss Lane, Rochdale.

‘Officers have conducted a search of the school and found no threat to the school or wider area.’

Matthew Moss is a coeducational secondary school, that was previously a community school administered by Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council.

In November 2019 it was converted to academy status and is now part of the Watergrove Trust.

The Watergrove Trust has also been contacted for further comment.
