Sepulveda Basin gets $22M for upgrades ahead of 2028 Olympics

Los Angeles and state officials announced $22 million in new funding for improvements to the Sepulveda Basin over the weekend including upgrades to sports fields, wildfire prevention work and projects aimed at making the sprawling San Fernando Valley recreation area more accessible.

Mayor Karen Bass joined state and local lawmakers Saturday to detail how the money will be spent: $8 million for improvements to the Balboa Sports Center, $4 million for the Hjelte Sports Fields and $6 million for transportation and mobility improvements from Lake Balboa across Victory Boulevard to the basin to improve accessibility.

Another $4 million will support fire prevention and vegetation management, including $2 million for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel said the money comes from Proposition 4, the $10 billion climate bond approved by California voters in 2024 to fund projects related to climate resilience, water, wildfire prevention and natural resource conservation.

Bass said the investment builds on efforts to address fires and other safety concerns in the basin. Fires there fell about 43% during the first six months of 2026 compared with the same period last year, according to her office.

The improvements also come as Los Angeles prepares for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, when the Sepulveda Basin is expected to host events.

“The investments that we’re making today are not only going to benefit folks during the Olympics, but it’s a legacy that’s going to last long after the Olympics flame goes out,” Gabriel said Saturday.
