Sox miss out on chance to hit the .500 mark as five-game winning streak ends

SAN DIEGO — Xander Bogaerts hit a go-ahead infield single in the eighth, Miguel Andujar and Manny Machado homered and the Padres beat the White Sox 4-3 on Sunday at Petco Park. The loss ended the Sox’ five-game winning streak and prevented them from reaching the .500 mark.

Sox reliever Tyler Davis walked Ramon Laureano to open the eighth. The Sox brought in Bryan Hudson, who struck out Andujar. Laureano stole second base and moved to third on Jackson Merrill’s single. After Merrill stole second, Machado struck out before Bogaerts’ check-swing single gave the Padres a 4-3 lead.

Padres closer Mason Miller struck out Chase Meidorth and pinch hitter Edgar Quero to open the ninth. Center fielder Tristan Peters singled and stole second, but Miller struck out Luisangel Acuna on three pitches to earn his 11th save.

After a leadoff single by Chase Meidroth to lead off the seventh, Derek Hill, pinch-hitting for Jarred Kelenic, hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 3-3.

The Sox took a 1-0 lead in the third on catcher Drew Romo’s leadoff homer. Romo did have a passed ball in the fourth that allowed Boegarts to score to cap a three-run inning for the Padres.

Sox superstar Munetaka Murakami was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Sox starter Anthony Kay had a no-decision after allowing three runs — two earned — and seven hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

Griffin Canning started in his debut for the Padres, who snapped a four-game skid, and allowed one run and struck out seven in five innings.
