The New Hennessey Blackbird Hypercar Is Inspired By A Historic Spy Plane

For most of Hennessey Performance’s existence, the output-obsessed Texas outfit was known for souping up the most aggressive trims of American automobiles, including the Dodge Viper, Chevrolet Corvette and Camaro, Ford F-150 Raptor, and Cadillac Escalade.

Hennessey then entered a new era with the arrival of its Venom F5, a twin-turbo V8-powered hypercar crafted in-house that pushes over 2,000 hp in its Revolution Evo trim, a positively profane amount of power that will hopefully earn founder John Hennessey and co. lofty status as manufacturer of the world’s fastest production car. It’s this context that allows for the best understanding and appreciation of the Venom F5’s latest Blackbird evolution, which flies in the face of the brute force described above.

That name is a nod to the SR-71 Blackbird, the iconic Cold War-era stealth reconnaissance jet that was capable of cruising at over Mach 3 (2,200 mph) and simply accelerating away from surface-to-air missiles. Hennessey actually owns the registered Blackbird trademark for high-performance vehicles and automotive applications, and the rights are not wasted. The car’s main line was modeled after the point where the SR-71’s concave upper and lower surfaces converge into a razor-sharp edge while the car’s active rear stabilizers deploy at 71 mph and sit at +/- 71 degrees.

Another extreme aeronautical reference is the Hennessey Blackbird’s diamond-shaped quad-exhaust, which harks to that of the record-breaking Bell X-1 aircraft that became the first to break the sound barrier in 1947. Optional Sky Glass—featuring an asymmetrical tapering shape inspired by the SR-71’s canopy—optimizes the light and airy feel of the Blackbird’s cabin. Inside its gullwing doors, you’ll find a spartan space characterized by an oversized tachometer, a dash-mounted whiskey compass, a six-speed gated manual shifter, an exposed shift linkage, a physical ignition key, and a button-less steering wheel void of an infotainment system or digital displays (though navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto can still be run through a smartphone secured in an unassuming holster).

This deliberately pared-down cockpit design speaks to the Blackbird’s purpose: to be a driver’s hypercar that places mechanical interaction above all else. The choice in engine is perhaps the most fascinating: Hennessey is working with performance powertrain purveyors Ilmor Engineering to develop an all-new naturally aspirated, high-revving 6.2-liter V8 that should develop between 800 and 850 horsepower. In the Blackbird—which will tip the scales at under 3,000 pounds thanks to a full-carbon tub and carbon-fiber bodywork—the engine should be good for 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 220 mph.

Those numbers are still insanely fast, but the engine won’t be crafted for speed’s sake alone. As Hennessey explains, “The engine is intended to deliver immediate throttle response, linear power, and emotional sound—mechanical, unfiltered, and directly connected to the driver. The emphasis on beauty and attention to detail extends to the engine itself, with its visibility through the rear glass engine cover as significant as its unique sound signature.”

The connection that the Hennessey Blackbird hopes to create with the driver as a beautiful, naturally aspirated, manual hypercar is meant to be timeless. Like the Pagani Huayra Epitome—or even the Lotus Emira 420 Sport, to an extent—the car is for drivers who want to feel as much as possible behind the wheel.

With Venom F5 production expected to end by 2028, Blackbird will serve as Hennessey’s next flagship. More than half of the 71 examples scheduled for production in 2029 and 2030 have been spoken for, so act quickly if you want to buy one for $2.5 million.
