The long-awaited Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is ready to launch as tickets for the $1 billion facility go on sale at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 21.
Located in downtown Los Angeles’ busy Exposition Park, which is already home to several world-class museums, including the California Science Center and the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, the approximately 300,000-square-foot museum opens Sept. 22 with inaugural exhibitions that cover the gamut from science fiction to murals to comics to classic paintings, and tickets are expected to be a hot item.
According to museum officials, people may purchase up to nine tickets per order and long wait times are expected when making reservations. Tickets will be sold for admission through Feb. 28 and will cost $25 for adults and $21 for seniors age 65 and over and children 17 years of age and younger. Ticket buyers must have an account with the museum to purchase tickets.
Those who score opening day tickets will be among the first members of the public to enter the stunning five-story facility that boasts a futuristic-looking biomorphic design that’s lifted off the ground to give the impression that the building is floating over the park, as if it’s a spaceship about to take off.
The museum was co-founded by filmmaker George Lucas and business executive Mellody Hobson to explore the universal tradition of telling stories through images by encompassing everything from prehistoric cave paintings to today’s screen art.
With approximately 100,000 square feet of dedicated gallery space the inaugural exhibition is made up of more than 1,200 objects taken from the founding collection of more than 40,000 works.
One of the more than 30 opening installations is “Star Wars in Motion,” featuring props, costumes and vehicle designs from the first six films in the franchise, including Luke Skywalker’s landspeeder.
Other galleries will look at comics and anime, paintings, prints, and illustrations telling) the stories of major historical events, photography and a selection of the Museum’s renowned holdings of works by premier American illustrator Norman Rockwell and others.
