At a rally in his hometown of Middletown, Ohio, Vice President JD Vance told the story of Kevin Flanagan, a computer programmer who was fired from his job and told that in order to collect his severance, he would need to train his “foreign” replacement, which he did.
On his last day of work, as Vance recounted, Flanagan left the office, walked to the parking lot, got in his truck, and shot himself.
Vance said: “The blood of those people, in my view, it pools at the feet of those who would sell out their country for a cheap bottom line.”
Conservative political pundit John Podhoretz, editor-in-chief of Commentary magazine, responded on social media: “So, the 2 billion other people who didn’t shoot themselves after a career misfortune-what explains them, you factitious whelp?”
President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump, Jr., responded to Podhoretz: “Career misfortune? Having your job taken away and given to a cheaper foreign worker — then being forced to train them — is ‘career misfortune?’ Sums up the soulless globalism my father and JD were elected to destroy.”
[NOTE: In September 2025, President Trump issued an Executive Order imposing a $100,000 entry fee for new H-1B visas hired from abroad. In June, a federal judge ruled the fee was unlawful.]
