Trump says Iran ‘hasn’t paid big enough price’ as Middle East talks flounder

After rejecting Iran’s latest offer during peace negotiations, Donald Trump has said the country ‘hasn’t paid a big enough price’ in the war.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote: ‘I will soon be reviewing the plan Iran has just sent to us, but can’t imagine that it would be acceptable…
‘They have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to humanity, and the world, over the last 47 years.’
Fears of a collapse of peace talks are growing as both Iran and the US can’t seem to agree on the basics of a proposal.
Yesterday, the US president insisted the options were to either ‘make a deal’ or ‘blast the hell’ out of Iran and ‘finish them forever’, as he hinted the dispute could last some time.

‘They want to make a deal, I’m not satisfied with it, so we’ll see what happens,’ he said on CNN.
Despite refusing to rule out further military intervention, when asked if he wanted to go in heavy on Iran, the president replied: ‘I’d prefer not.’
‘They want to make a deal, I’m not satisfied with it, so we’ll see what happens,’ Trump said at the White House.
He did not elaborate on what he saw as its shortcomings but expressed frustration with the Iranian leadership.
‘It’s a very disjointed leadership,’ Trump said. ‘They all want to make a deal, but they’re all messed up.’
Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported Iran handed over its plan to mediators in Pakistan on Thursday night.

The shaky three-week ceasefire between the US and Iran appears to be holding, though both countries have traded accusations of violations.
It comes as the US has withdrawn 5,000 troops from Germany in a further sign of a growing gulf between America and Europe.
The move was a response to comments from German chancellor Friedrich Merz that the US was being ‘humiliated’ by Iran.
