A man in his 60s was killed during a predawn blaze on the West Side.
The fire erupted about 2:15 a.m. at an apartment building in the 3400 block of West Monroe Street, in the Garfield Park neighborhood, police said.
By the time officers got there, a woman and a 4-year-old had already escaped and were outside, standing on the sidewalk.
Firefighters began extinguishing the flames and found a 62-year-old man inside. He was treated on scene by paramedics and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
The woman and child were also taken in good condition to Stroger, as a precaution, police said.
No one was displaced and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
