White Sox again put in extra effort to beat Yankees

Another impressive start by Sean Burke. Another tight victory over the New York Yankees. And a series split after dropping the first two games.

The White Sox will take it.

Tristan Peters drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded walk in the 11^th, Sean Burke struck out 10 in six scoreless innings and the Sox beat the Yankees 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.

The AL Central-leading White Sox salvaged a split with another tight win after rallying to beat New York 6-5 in 12 innings on Wednesday night.

“Going down two in a series is tough,” Peters said. “Taking it day by day is the only way we can do that. If we’re focused on those two losses, that just makes it build up and, like, snowball effect.”

Burke kept his string of dominant outings going on a day when New York starter Ryan Weathers was every bit as good. He held the White Sox to three hits in seven innings.

Sox lefty Chris Murphy gave up an RBI single to New York’s Trent Grisham in the 10^th that made it 1-0. The White Sox tied it in the bottom half on Andrew Benintendi’s pinch-hit single against Angel Chivilli.

Seranthony Domínguez got out of a second-and-third jam in the top of the 11^th when Anthony Volpe grounded out.

The White Sox loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the 11th against Fernando Cruz on an infield single by Sam Antonacci.

Colson Montgomery went ahead 3-0 in the count before striking out. Peters then walked on four pitches to bring in the winning run and set off the celebration. He ran into the outfield before teammates caught up to him and pulled off his jersey.

“You lose the first two of four, it’s like, alright, let’s just scrap and maybe (win) at least one,” Benintendi said. “Especially against a team like that, the arms they have, it shows a lot about what we have in here.”

Burke continued his string of dominant performances, giving up just three hits and walking two while finishing one strikeout shy of his season and career high. The 6-6 right-hander has a 1.42 ERA over his past eight appearances, a stretch that started with a dominant performance in a win at Yankee Stadium on June 18.

“Today, I threw a couple changeups and I was able to get strikes on them and bad swings on them,” Burke said. “That’s something I think I’m gonna lean on a little bit more as time goes on, just mixing that in when some of the other stuff is not as sharp. I just feel good with all that stuff now. The game plans coming in have been good.”

Sean Newcomb worked two scoreless innings, and Bryan Hudson retired all three batters in the ninth.

“Tough couple games,” manager Will Venable said. “We really had to grind it. Contributions from everybody. Obviously, extra innings, there’s a ton of situational stuff that you have to execute, and guys really executed well.”
