With no time to get to the hospital, parents pull over on a San Dimas road and give birth

This kid’s going to have some stories to tell at birthdays.

It all happened so fast, on a warm night just off the 57 freeway in San Dimas.

The baby was coming, but there was no time to make it to the hospital. So, mom and dad pulled their SUV over.

The father of the baby called for help when his wife went into labor in the car, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel from Station 141, based in San Dimas, responded to the call regarding a possible childbirth around 12:12 a.m. at the intersection of Via Verde Drive and the Orange (57) Freeway, said L.A. County Fire Engineer Jonathan Torres, a spokesperson for the department.

Just like that, a new life was in the world.

Video from the scene shows a delicate moment, even though not in the normal confines of a neonatal unit.

In the dark of night, the flashing of emergency lights all around and the din of passing vehicles, multiple emergency personnel helped load a woman holding a small swaddled baby into an ambulance on a stretcher.

Mom was alert and speaking to paramedics, but still zeroed in on her newborn.

A man, apparently dad, hopped in behind.

And off they went, with a new life wrapped in a blanket, in the palms of their hands.

Happy birthday, little one.

By 12:35 a.m., they had arrived at the nearest hospital, Torres said.

Torres acknowledged such birth’s are rare, but not unprecedented.

“I don’t know that it happens a lot. But I know that it does happen,” he said, reflecting on his own career, in which he’d been on two such calls.
