A house explosion left one person dead and two others injured Sunday night in far northwest Wonder Lake, fire officials said.
The explosion also caused damage to two neighboring residences.
Fire crews responded at about 7:50 p.m. Sunday to the 7500 block of Birch Drive, the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District said in a statement.
One person was pronounced dead on the scene, while a 76-year-old man and a 28-year-old man were both taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with serious injuries, according to another statement. One of the surviving patients was airlifted by a medical helicopter due to the severity their injuries.
Due to the serious nature of the incident, a MABAS Box Alarm was requested to bring additional fire and EMS resources to the scene. Mutual aid companies assisted with firefighting efforts, patient care, and scene management, the district said.
“We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to our mutual aid partners who responded and provided critical assistance,” Fire Chief Matt Yegge said in the statement.
An investigation into what caused the explosion is underway.
