The Buffalo Bills have given some roster deference to quarterback Josh Allen, seeking his input on signings and sometimes even landing players at his urging.
But the Bills could cut ties with one of Allen’s closest friends this offseason, with an insider predicting that veteran Mitch Trubisky may have lost his grip on the backup job. The Bills brought in experienced quarterback Mike White last season, and a full offseason with the team could give White the chance needed to unseat Trubisky in the No. 2 job.
Bills Could Make Big Change at Quarterback
The Bills have shown a lot of faith in Trubisky, first signing him in a surprise move when he hit free agency in 2021 and had the chance to compete for starting jobs elsewhere. Trubisky then left for the Pittsburgh Steelers but eventually lost his starting role and returned to the Bills last year to back up Allen once again.
While Trubisky hasn’t seen the field much behind the durable Allen, he has looked sharp in limited opportunities.
Syracuse.com reporter Ryan Talbot predicted that Trubisky’s time with the Bills could come to an end, with White winning the job in training camp.
âThis prediction may not be as bold as the others, but Mitch Trubiskyâs time as the Billsâ No. 2 quarterback comes to an end this summer,” Talbot wrote.
Talbot predicted that White’s propensity for bold play could give him a leg up over the safer Trubisky.
âWhite will need to be better than he was in the regular season finale last year, when he completed just 3-of-11 passes for 28 yards against the Patriots, but his willingness to push the ball down the field gives him a chance over Trubisky, a quarterback known for dinking and dunking the football,” Talbot wrote.
Others Point to Trouble Signs for Mitch Trubisky
Trubisky could already be losing his grip on the backup spot. The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia wrote in June that Trubisky had some uninspiring performances at the team’s minicamp, leaving an opening for White to earn the backup job.
âThe backup QB job is up for grabs,â Buscaglia wrote. âMinicamp was the first opportunity for reporters to see practices on consecutive days, and from both an opportunity and performance perspective, it appears that Mitchell Trubisky isnât necessarily a lock to remain Allenâs backup in 2025. When the Bills signed Mike White to a two-year deal late in the season, that was a fairly significant signal that the team could look to replace Trubisky this upcoming season.â
White does have experience as a starting NFL quarterback, starting seven games between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. He completed 61.4% of his passes for 2,247 yards with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions over his career.
Trubisky could have some help due to his close relationship with Allen. The two are close off the field, spending time together in the offseason. Allen has exerted some sway over roster decisions in the past, asking the team to re-sign veteran Matt Barkley in exchange for his help in recruiting Von Miller to sign in 2022.
