Max Scherzer is out for the Toronto Blue Jays after just two innings of work in the first of a three-game World Series rematch against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
It’s unclear at the moment of writing this why he’s been removed, but it is notable that there is a flu bug going around the Blue Jays locker room.
Josh Fleming, who had been recalled earlier today, takes over for Scherzer in the third inning. Scherzer gave up two hits (one being a two-run home run by Dodgers’ Teoscar Hernandez) in his two innings of work. This will be a story to monitor for the Jays.

Blue Jays’ Max Scherzer Removed from Dodgers Game for Unknown Reason
GettyThe latest bit of Toronto Blue Jays News highlights a low-risk insurance move the team is making ahead of this season.
This story will be updated once the reasoning for Scherzer’s departure from the game surfaces.
The Blue Jays have been going through the wringer in the first week and some change of the MLB season with their pitching staff. The likes of Cody Ponce, Jose Berrios, Trey Yesavage, and Shane Bieber are all on the IL.
As for Max Scherzer, he re-signed with the Toronto Blue Jays on a one-year, $3 million reunion deal this offseason. Last season with the Jays, he was only able to pitch 85 total innings, and in that sample size, Scherzer had an ERA of 5.19.

More on Max Scherzer’s Status/Previous Blue Jays Roster Moves
This Max Scherzer news will, again, be one to monitor as the Blue Jays-Dodgers game progresses.
MLBTradeRumors.com detailed the earlier roster moves by Toronto:
“Today, the Jays start a tough series against the Dodgers. They have Max Scherzer, Kevin Gauman, and Dylan Cease slated to start but itâs a tough lineup and the staff has been taxed in recent days. Fleming has been added to potentially cover some length, if need be. Signed to a minor league deal in the offseason, he pitched for Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday. He covered 3 2/3 innings, throwing 57 pitches, so heâs relatively stretched out.”
Josh Fleming was tested early in the first game of the Dodgers series and immediately gave up a two-run home run to Freddie Freeman. It could be a long week for the Blue Jays, who desperately need some aid from their pitching staff.
