Chelsea have learned Porto’s asking price for goalkeeper Diogo Costa as they consider upgrading on Robert Sanchez this summer.

There is expected to be plenty of transfer business done at Stamford Bridge before the new season starts, with Xabi Alonso taking over as manager.

Marc Cucurella has already left for Real Madrid and influential midfielder Enzo Fernandez is being heavily linked with making the same move.

Even if no more big names depart, Alonso will want to put his own stamp on the team and bring in signings before his first campaign as a Premier League manager.

Goalkeeper has long been a position Chelsea look below par in, as they look to return to being genuine title challengers.

Robert Sanchez was brought in from Brighton in 2023 and has now made 111 appearances for the Blues, but has not really proved himself to be a top level goalkeeper.

The Spain international is certainly capable of excellent performances, as he showed in the Club World Cup final last year, but is also prone to an error far too regularly.

Denmark international Filip Jorgensen arrived from Villarreal in 2024 but has similarly failed to convince in his 36 appearances in a Chelsea shirt.

Porto and Portugal goalkeeper Costa has regularly been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in recent seasons and the rumour mill has churned up his name again this summer.

The 26-year-old has played 246 times for Porto, winning three Primeira Liga titles and has been a regular for his country since 2022, winning 43 caps.

Costa only signed his last contract extension in December last year and is signed to Porto till 2030, so he would not come cheaply for anyone keen on signing him.

Portuguese outlet Record report, via The Mirror, that the goalkeeper is valued at €60m (£51m) by Porto, however that could rise if he catches the eye at this summer’s World Cup.

Portugal did not make a good start to the competition, drawing 1-1 with DR Congo, ahead of games against Uzbekistan and Colombia.
