Cole Palmer reveals what Chelsea players said in dressing room after penalty row

Cole Palmer revealed Chelsea’s players were ‘laughing and joking’ about the penalty row which partially overshadowed his side’s 6-0 thrashing of Everton.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side produced their most devastating performance of the season to date and closed to within just three points of Manchester United, having played a game less, enhancing the prospect of European football at Stamford Bridge next season.

Man of the moment Palmer produced another sensational display, scoring four times to take him to within just one goal of his former Manchester City teammate, Erling Haaland, in the race for the Golden Boot.

Palmer’s goalscoring exploits were partially soured, however, by the unsavoury argument that took place before Palmer’s fourth of the evening which came from the penalty spot.

The England international has been faultless from 12 yards this season but was forced to fight his corner, not for the first time, and wrestle the ball away from teammate Noni Madueke, before beating Jordan Pickford with ease.

Nicolas Jackson was also seen remonstrating with his teammates before Palmer tucked away his 25th goal of an increasingly prolific campaign with customary ease.

Asked about the incident after the game, Palmer insisted he and his teammates were able to shrug off the controversy and claimed it demonstrated a willingness to take responsibility rather than evidence of a divided squad.

‘Other players wanted to take it which is understandable,’ said Palmer. ‘The game is 4-0 but I’m the penalty taker and I wanted to take it so at the end I took it.

‘I think we’re just trying to show everyone wants to take responsibility maybe it was a bit over the top the argument but everyone wants to just win and help.

‘It’s nothing major, we were laughing and joking about it but the gaffer has told us now.’

Alfie Gilchrist, who rounded off the night with his first senior goal for his boyhood club, added: ‘We’ve all spoke about it we’ve all come in and brushed it aside.’

Pochettino took more of a dim view of the incident, however, and chided his players for acting like children.

‘The players know, the club knows that Palmer is the penalty-taker,; said Pochettino, who was visibly agitated during his post-match duties. I’m so, so upset about the situation. In every country people are watching the game and we cannot send this type of image.

‘I want to apologise to our fans. Discipline is the most important thing for the team. It’s a collective sport.

‘I’m not going to accept this type of behaviour. I’m going to be very strong. I promise it’s not going to happen again.

‘We need to move on and talk about the game – 6-0 against a very good team like Everton, clean sheet, I think we should be happy, no?’
