Cooper Flagg Gets Emotional About Facing LeBron James: ‘It’s a Dream Come True’

The Dallas Mavericks defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 134-128 on Sunday behind another historic performance from rookie Cooper Flagg. The 19-year-old followed up a 51-point outing earlier in the week with 45 points, adding nine assists and eight rebounds in a near triple-double effort.

The performance marked Flagg’s second consecutive 40-point game, making him the first rookie since Allen Iverson in 1996-97 to accomplish that feat. It also added to a growing list of milestones, including becoming the youngest player in NBA history to score 50 points and recording 96 points over a two-game span, the most by a rookie since Wilt Chamberlain.

Beyond the numbers, the moment carried added significance as Flagg matched up against LeBron James. After the game, Flagg reflected on facing one of his childhood idols. “When I was a little kid watching him… it’s incredible,” he said. “It’s a dream come true… These are the moments… to match up against somebody like that. The career he’s had, he’s obviously one of the greatest. So it’s incredible.”

Sunday’s game featured a rare generational matchup, with Flagg delivering one of the best performances of his rookie season against a veteran still producing at a high level. James finished with 30 points, a season-high 15 assists, and nine rebounds, leading a Lakers team missing key contributors.

With Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves sidelined due to injuries, James carried the offensive load for Los Angeles. The 41-year-old continued to show his durability and playmaking ability in his 23rd NBA season.

Flagg acknowledged that level of sustained excellence. “Just to watch him and see him be able to do the things that he’s still able to do out there… it’s really impressive,” he said.

The game also produced a unique statistical milestone. According to league data, Flagg and James became the first players in NBA history to each score at least 20 points in the same game with one player aged 40 or older and the other a teenager.

Flagg’s scoring came efficiently. He finished 14-of-27 from the field and 13-of-15 from the free-throw line, while contributing across multiple categories. His ability to control the game as both a scorer and facilitator stood out throughout the contest.

“I’m confident in myself, and I know what I’m capable of,” Flagg said after the game, pointing to his continued growth late in the season.

While the win does not impact the Mavericks’ postseason outlook, it reinforces Flagg’s emergence as a foundational piece for the franchise. Dallas has struggled throughout the season, sitting well outside the playoff picture, but Flagg’s production has remained consistent.

He is averaging over 20 points per game while ranking among rookie leaders in rebounds and assists. His recent performances have also shifted the Rookie of the Year race, with Flagg moving into the lead following his 96-point weekend.

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd emphasized the consistency behind Flagg’s rise. “He’s doing what he’s been doing all season,” Kidd said. “Being able to play different positions… he’s never complained and has delivered for us.”

For the Lakers, the loss highlights ongoing concerns as the playoffs approach. The team remains in a tight race in the Western Conference standings but is dealing with significant injuries.

Doncic is out for the remainder of the regular season with a hamstring strain, while Reaves is expected to miss four to six weeks with an oblique injury. Their absences leave James as the primary offensive option heading into the postseason.

Despite the defeat, James praised the incoming generation, including Flagg. “He’s obviously special,” James said. “He’s gotten better and better.”

For Flagg, the opportunity to compete against a player he grew up watching added context to an already historic night.
