Denzel Dumfries’ contract negotiations with Inter Milan have ground to a halt and the right-back is keen to join Manchester United in the summer.

The 28-year-old joined Inter from PSV Eindhoven in 2021 and has gone on to make 129 appearances across three years with the Nerazzurri, helping the club win back-to-back Coppa Italia titles, three successive Supercoppa Italiana titles and this year’s Serie A.

However, speculation has been mounting that Dumfries could be set for the exit door at the San Siro at the end of the season and United have been credited with a strong interest in the Netherlands international in recent months.

Reports in January suggested United had been offered Dumfries in exchange for Aaron Wan-Bissaka – but the Red Devils were keen to keep hold of the latter at the time and the deal was rejected out of hand.

However, the Old Trafford giants remain keen on Dumfries and have been keeping close tabs on the Dutchman’s delicate contract situation from afar ahead of a potential bid in the summer transfer window.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, there are still no signs of any agreement being reached between Dumfries and Inter over a renewal – with the defender said to be demanding a salary of €5million (£4.3m) to extend his stay.

The report adds that Dumfries ‘would like’ to complete a switch to the Theatre of Dreams and this could be a real possibility, especially if his fellow countryman Erik ten Hag manages to avoid the sack.

The former PSV star has always turned his nose up at the prospect of joining a mid-level team in the Premier League but would jump at the chance to join United.

It’s claimed Inter expected an ‘explosion’ from Dumfries when they signed him three years ago but the full-back has failed to live up to expectations, despite his contribution to their Serie A triumph this term.

Dumfries’ current contract with Simone Inzaghi’s side is due to expire in 2025.

Quizzed on his future last month, Dumfries insisted discussions over a possible renewal at Inter were ‘going well’.

‘We haven’t been working on that yet. Because we’ve still been working to win the Scudetto. Now the European Championships are also approaching as well,’ he said.

‘You never know how things will go. But the talks have been going well.

‘The club is going through a particular moment, but I expect that the talks will resume soon.’
