Manchester United have an interest in Hayden Hackney but are not expected to make a move for the Middlesbrough midfielder this summer, according to reports.

Hackney was named Championship Player of the Season after an impressive campaign for Middlesbrough in which he scored five goals and registered eight assists in 38 appearances.

However, the 23-year-old is expected to leave Middlesbrough this summer after the club missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

Hackney has just a year left on his contract with Middlesbrough and he has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to The Athletic, Manchester United are among the clubs who have shown an interest in Hackney, however, he is low on their list of midfield targets and a deal for the 23-year-old ‘is not anticipated at present’.

The report adds that Tottenham and Crystal Palace are interested in Hackney but the player’s preference is a move to Everton, who have yet to open official negotiations with Middlesbrough.

Hackney, who came through Middlesbrough’s academy, became a regular starter in midfield during Michael Carrick’s time at the club.

Speaking last month, Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg admitted that Hackney is destined to become a Premier League player.

‘He’s unbelievable to work with,’ Hellberg said.

‘He’s a pleasure and such a great guy for us to work with. He’s a top player.

‘He has everything and he will end up in the Premier League someday, and hopefully with us. Top, top player.’
