McIlroy Addresses Absence of Woods and Mickelson Ahead of Masters

As Monday marks the beginning of Masters week at Augusta National Golf Club, the 2026 tournament arrives with a noticeable difference. For the first time in more than three decades, neither Tiger Woods nor Phil Mickelson will be in attendance.

It will be the first Masters without either legend competing since 1994. While their absence undeniably changes the atmosphere, the tournament’s traditions remain firmly intact. Still, their influence will not go unrecognized.

Recent champion Rory McIlroy made it clear that even in their absence, Woods and Mickelson will be acknowledged during one of the week’s most exclusive traditions.

McIlroy Addresses Absences Ahead of Champions Dinner

Appearing at the Drive, Chip and Putt contest on Sunday, McIlroy was all smiles. He donned his green jacket following last year’s historic victory. Now a five-time major champion, he enters the week not only as a contender, but as the host of the famed Champions Dinner.

Speaking with The Golf Channel, McIlroy addressed the notable absences without naming names directly. However, the context was unmistakable.

“Unfortunately, there will be a couple of guys that won’t be in that room, which is a shame, but I want to make sure that they’re acknowledged as well,” McIlroy said. “They’ve been two of the greatest champions that the Masters has ever seen. But it’s going to be a really cool night. I can’t wait. I hope everyone enjoys the dinner and enjoys everything that I’ve selected.”

The Champions Dinner, scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, is a cornerstone of Masters week. McIlroy described it as “the most exclusive dinner club in all of sport.” He emphasized both its history and the honor of hosting it.

His menu is expected to reflect a mix of personal favorites and local influences, continuing a long-standing tradition where the defending champion curates the evening’s experience.

Woods and Mickelson Absent Under Different Circumstances

The absence of Woods and Mickelson stems from vastly different situations.

Woods, a 15-time major champion, will miss the tournament following a recent car crash that led to a DUI charge. After signaling a potential return to competitive golf, one highlighted by his appearance in TGL, those plans were halted. Woods has since announced he will step away from the game to seek treatment. Multiple reports indicate he has left the country to pursue recovery.

Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, is also sidelined, citing an ongoing family health matter. Despite returning to competition in LIV Golf events earlier this year, he confirmed via social media that he will be away from the game for an extended period.

“Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter,” he wrote. “I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year. I wish everyone the best of luck and will be watching.”

Few additional details have emerged regarding his situation.

A Different Look, but a Familiar Stage at The Masters

While the absence of Woods and Mickelson marks the end of an era for many fans, the Masters remains bigger than any one player. The traditions, the course, and the competition continue to define the event.

The 2026 Masters Tournament officially begins Thursday, April 9. The days leading up to Round 1 are filled with beloved traditions and family-friendly events that make the week unlike any other in golf.

Even without two of its most recognizable figures, the stage is set and the storylines are just beginning.
