Mets Face Dilemma as Juan Soto Addresses Injury Concerns

New York Mets leftfielder Juan Soto left the April 3 game against the San Francisco Giants. The star left the contest, noticeably limping. Speculation ran rampant with the severity of what happened via MLB.com.

“I’ve experienced calf tightness before,” Soto said Saturday. “This is definitely not the worst I’ve felt. So I feel positive with that.”

While a calf strain doesn’t seem like a problem, if it is mishandled, issues like future injury and muscle weakness could arise. The fact that Soto does not seem alarmed or upset about the strain which looks like good news for the Mets. As a result, the Mets will do everything they can to ensure their superstar gets back on a comfortable timetable. Manager Carlos Mendoza detailed the plan.

“We’ll wait,” Mendoza said Saturday. “We’ll continue to call it day-by-day until we have to make a decision.”

“That’s a tricky area there,” Mendoza added. “We’re gonna have to be really, really careful with him.”

Soto injured his right calf, running from first to third on a hit. Speed is actually a profound part of Soto’s game. Despite gaining acclaim and a massive contract based on his batting eye and on-base percentage, Soto’s baserunning acumen is underrated.

Last season, he swiped a career-high 38 bases. Moreover, Soto gets a jump on balls hit to the outfield. The statistics bear out that, as a member of the Mets, he plays solid outfield defense. Granted, his 1.78 range factor is below the league average of 2.00. Yet, he’s made one error in 271 chances with eight assists in that span.

If the Mets do place the 27-year-old on the injured list, they can make the move retroactive to Saturday. Under those circumstances, provided the outfielder is healthy, Soto can return sooner. The injury arrives at an inopportune moment for the hitter. Unlike last season, when he struggled, Soto enjoyed a successful start.

For example, his slash line of .355/.412/.516 helped a the lineup start scoring runs. On top of that, the four-time All-Star added one home run and five runs batted in. According to Baseball Savant, Sto’s swing rate is 12% higher this year, with more line drives than fly balls. In essence, he is attacking center field more with less pull.

Brett Baty, normally an infielder but who did receive outfield reps in spring training, could have received Soto’s time. However, a jammed thumb made way for veteran Jared Young. In seven games, the 30-year-old recorded a .385/.467/.538. Plus, he recorded the first outfield assist of his career.

Home Cooking Could Soothe Uncertainty

The Mets return to Citi Field this week for three games apiece against the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Athletics. If the team sends Mendoza to the IL, it can feast on    struggling/young/underachieving teams. Additionally, the Mets would need to make a corresponding move. A player that could impress is Syracuse utility player Jihwan Bae, who is batting .320 with two home runs to start the season.

Make no mistake, the Mets need Soto in the lineup. Still, they need him to return healthy and ready to contribute immediately. Now, can the team find the right balance between health and maintaining competitiveness?
