Michigan Gives Final Injury Update on Yaxel Lendeborg Ahead of 2026 National Championship

Michigan has provided a final injury update on star forward Yaxel Lendeborg ahead of the 2026 NCAA men’s basketball national championship game.

Lendeborg suffered a sprained MCL and a rolled ankle during Michigan’s dominating win over Arizona. Despite leaving the game, he returned in the second half and contributed in limited minutes. Now, both the player and coaching staff expect him to be on the court for the title game.

Yaxel Lendeborg Injury Update Ahead of Championship

Lendeborg is expected to play despite dealing with two injuries. He logged only 14 minutes in the Final Four matchup but still made an impact after returning to the floor.

Michigan head coach Dusty May said medical evaluations have been encouraging as the team prepares for the championship game.

“Yeah, all imaging has come back clean, and he’s getting treatment and doing rehab all day today,” May said. “I’m sure he’ll give it a go tomorrow, but that will be entirely up to him and the medical staff. They’ll tell me if he can go, and if he can — we were laughing. He played the second half like a 38-year-old at the YMCA — and a really good 38-year-old at the YMCA.”

May added, “Whatever version of Yaxel we get, it’s going to be somebody that helps us play better basketball.”

Lendeborg was not listed on Michigan’s availability report, which further supports expectations that he will be active for the game.

The Michigan Star Vows to Play Through Injury for National Championship

Following Michigan’s win over Arizona, Lendeborg made it clear that he intends to play in the national championship unless he is physically unable to.

“It’s a weird feeling to have the pain that I’m having right now, I’ve never experienced it before,” he said in his post-game interviews. “So um, coach said at worst it’s an MCL sprain and obviously I rolled my ankle so I mean just that. But I’m gonna push through there’s no way I’m missing (the) game on Monday night no matter what goes on. So I’m gonna play unless I can’t walk at all.”

Even while limited, Lendeborg contributed in the Final Four by knocking down two three-pointers in the second half. His presence forced Arizona to adjust defensively despite his injury.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported on X, “Michigan trainer Chris Williams told ESPN the MRI on Yaxel Lendeborg’s knee looks “very clean structurally, all the ligaments are very strong.” He says Lendeborg has a “low-grade” MCL sprain and a “small bone bruise” in his knee. He’s “very optimistic” Lendeborg will play.”

Yaxel Lendeborg’s Impact on Michigan vs UConn

Lendeborg’s availability is significant on both ends of the court. Offensively, he provides spacing and scoring, while defensively, he is one of Michigan’s most versatile players.

His ability to contest shots and disrupt plays will be important against a disciplined UConn offense. The Huskies are known for their efficiency and patience, ranking near the bottom nationally in possessions per game while prioritizing shot quality.

May addressed the challenge UConn presents regardless of Lendeborg’s health status.

“It’s going to be a challenge, healthy or injured or somewhere in between,” May said, via Sports Illustrated. “Obviously, the most difficult thing about UConn is their ability to get from one thing to the next to the next to the next. There’s no stoppage. Once they get you in action, they keep you in action. They have amazing counters and layers to their offense.”

He continued, “It’s going to take an extremely disciplined and focused approach every single possession because if you let your guard down, they take advantage of it.”

The 2026 NCAA men’s basketball national championship between UConn and Michigan is scheduled for Monday, April 6, 2026, at 8:50 p.m. ET. The game will air on TBS, TNT, and truTV and will be available to stream on NCAA March Madness platforms.
