UConn-Michigan: Dan Hurley Gives Concerning Update on Key Starter

UConn is heading to another national championship game, but Dan Hurley’s first major update before Monday night was not a reassuring one.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, Hurley said starting guard Solo Ball is “in a boot with a foot sprain” and would not practice Sunday, with the staff set to evaluate how he feels Monday ahead of the title game against Michigan. That immediately becomes one of the biggest storylines surrounding UConn as it prepares for the final game of the season.

The championship game is set for Monday, April 6, at 8:49 p.m. ET at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, with TBS carrying the broadcast. UConn arrives there after beating Illinois 71-62 in the Final Four, while Michigan rolled past Arizona 91-73 to punch its ticket.

Ball might not be the first name casual fans think of when they look at UConn’s roster, but this is not a minor development. He is a starter, and his availability matters against a Michigan team that has been overwhelming opponents with size, pace and scoring punch during this tournament run. ESPN’s tournament preview listed Ball at 13.9 points per game entering March Madness, underscoring how important he has been within Hurley’s regular rotation.

He also was productive in Saturday’s win, finishing with 13 points as UConn survived a physical game against Illinois to reach its third national title game in four seasons. That is what makes Hurley’s update feel more significant than routine pregame maintenance. With only one day between the Final Four and the championship, there is not much runway for recovery.

Solo Ball’s Injury Status: Why it Matters Against Michigan

Michigan is not arriving in the title game as a team UConn can simply outlast. The Wolverines just posted 91 points against Arizona and became the first team to score at least 90 points five times in one NCAA tournament, according to Reuters. Center Aday Mara erupted for 26 points in the semifinal, and Michigan has looked like the most explosive offense left in the field.

That puts extra pressure on UConn’s perimeter depth and lineup flexibility. Even if Ball plays, the question becomes whether he can move normally, defend without limitation and give Hurley the same minutes he usually would in a game of this magnitude. Against Michigan’s scoring balance, any restriction in the backcourt matters.

Other major storylines heading into Monday night

Beyond Ball, the biggest angle is the scale of what UConn is chasing. The Huskies are now one win from their seventh national championship and another signature moment in Hurley’s run, after already reaching three title games in four years.

Michigan, meanwhile, brings its own injury subplot. Star forward Yaxel Lendeborg had an injury scare against Arizona but returned, and his status is another major piece to monitor entering Monday.

Still, Ball is where this story starts. UConn earned the right to play for another title Saturday night. By Sunday, the biggest question had already shifted to whether one of Hurley’s starters will be fully ready when the ball goes up Monday in Indianapolis.
