The NBA has launched an investigation into the Milwaukee Bucks over their handling of Giannis Antetokounmpoâs availability, placing one of the leagueâs top stars and franchises under scrutiny late in the regular season. The inquiry centers on potential violations of the leagueâs player participation policy and conflicting accounts regarding Antetokounmpoâs health status.
The situation escalated after Shams Charania reported that the league had already interviewed Antetokounmpo, team officials, and the Bucksâ medical staff. According to Charania, Milwaukee informed the league that the two-time MVP is not ready to play, while Antetokounmpo told investigators he is healthy and wants to return.
âThe NBA is investigating the Milwaukee Bucks⦠regarding the health of Giannis Antetokounmpo,â Charania wrote, adding that multiple sides have provided differing accounts.
According to Eric Nehm of The Athletic, Antetokounmpo addressed the situation publicly before Fridayâs game against the Boston Celtics, making clear he disagrees with the teamâs decision to hold him out. âIâm available to play, but Iâm not in the game,â he said. âIâm available to play today. Right now. Iâm available.â He added that being told not to compete âis like a slap in my face,â underscoring the growing tension between player and organization.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Presents Conflicting Health Accounts

Antetokounmpo has not played since March 15, when he hyperextended his left knee in a win over the Indiana Pacers. The Bucks have listed him out with a bone bruise, and he has missed 10 consecutive games. However, the 31-year-old forward said Friday that he has been healthy for weeks and is ready to return.
âIâve never seen a case of a player⦠saying, I want to play,â Antetokounmpo said. âIf there needs to be an investigation, great. There should be.â
The National Basketball Players Association has also weighed in, previously issuing a statement supporting Antetokounmpoâs position and questioning whether the league is enforcing its participation policy consistently. The union suggested that withholding a healthy player could raise integrity concerns.
According to the information shared with the league, Antetokounmpo maintains that he has been willing and able to play but has not received medical clearance from the team. Meanwhile, Milwaukeeâs position is that the forward is not ready to return. The differing accounts have become central to the leagueâs investigation.
The Bucksâ season context adds another layer. The team has been eliminated from playoff contention and is headed toward the draft lottery. Antetokounmpo acknowledged that reality but rejected the idea of sitting out for long-term planning.
âWeâre not going to make the playoffs⦠but for me, itâs something that goes against my nature,â he said. âI donât want to do that. I want to play basketball.â
Doc Rivers Addresses Internal Tension and Next Steps

Head coach Doc Rivers said after Fridayâs 133-101 loss that he had not been informed of any change in Antetokounmpoâs status and emphasized that roster decisions are made by management.
âThis is a grown manâs game and it should be handled that way,â Rivers said. âI donât like when itâs this he said, she said stuff⦠We need to do something about it.â
Rivers also noted that he was unaware of the leagueâs investigation prior to media reports. He reiterated that communication between all parties needs to improve and should remain internal.
The disagreement reflects broader friction between Antetokounmpo and the organization during a difficult season. The Bucks have struggled, missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016, and explored major roster decisions, including evaluating Antetokounmpoâs long-term future.
Antetokounmpo did not rule out repairing the relationship, comparing the situation to âcouples therapyâ and calling for both sides to meet and find a solution âamicably.â However, he also made clear that the two sides are âdefinitely, definitely not on the same page.â
The outcome of the NBAâs investigation could carry significant implications, not only for the Bucks but also for how the league enforces its player participation rules. For now, the focus remains on resolving the dispute between one of the NBAâs biggest stars and his only franchise, as both sides await further clarity from the league.
