The New York Yankees will return Anthony Volpe soon, as Aaron Boone indicated before the Yankees series finale against the Athletics that Volpe could rejoin the team soo, and may go on a rehab assignment soon.
But how much does New York believe in Volpe? A recent mock trade pitch by SI.com’s Ryan Shea features the Yankees shipping off Volpe to the Milwaukee Brewers, which nets the Yankees pitcher Robert Gasser and Andrew Fischer.
Is this a trade the Yankees should consider? Or will Anthony Volpe get another extended runway of opportunities at shortstop?

Would the Yankees Decline this Trade Idea?

Is this trade idea by Ryan Shea worth it for the Yankees?
“The Yankees could realistically move Anthony Volpe to the Brewers because of roster depth and positional flexibility. In 2026, the Yankees will already have José Caballero, Amed Rosario, and Ryan McMahon capable of playing shortstop or third base, giving the team multiple internal options to cover Volpeâs position,” writes Shea.
Anthony Volpe is still just 24 years old. In his 1717 career at-bats with the Yankees, he has 52 home runs and a .222 batting average. In 2025 with the Yankees, a season where he may have been aiding a torn labrum, Volpe hit .212 with 19 home runs and 72 RBI.
Unfortunately for Anthony Volpe, he hasn’t performed well enough to escape trade rumors, and even Yankees fans can’t cry about how this is such a poor return package either. Volpe has 150+ strikeouts in all three full seasons he’s played, and has yet to post an OPS+ of over 90.

Who Says No to This Mock Deal?
It honestly might be the Brewers that would decline this hypothetical mock trade by SI.com.
Would the Brewers want Anthony Volpe to become their everyday shortstop?
Robert Gasser is a pitcher in the Brewers farm system, but he’s currently nursing an arm injury, which has led to him not being able to pitch in Triple-A.
Andrew Fischer saw some limelight during the WBC with Team Italy, and he proved he can hit real arms, but he’s very young and has a lot of development to do.
Only time will tell what the Yankees’ decision with Anthony Volpe will be, but considering the team’s hot start, it’s fair to assume he will get a handful of at-bats to see if he’s fully recovered from the shoulder injury he suffered at some point last year.
