Punters set for biggest Grand National winner this century as horse Corach Rambler is ‘absolutely hammered’ in betting

GRAND NATIONAL punters are set for their biggest winner this century – after defending champion Corach Rambler was ‘absolutely hammered’ in the betting.

Trainer Lucinda Russell’s superstar chaser is now just 4-1 to win the world’s most famous race for the second year in a row.

However, he could be without regular jockey Derek Fox as he awaits the outcome of a possible whip ban that may rule him out of the Aintree Festival completely.

Punters haven’t been totally put off in the run-up to the £1million race, though.

And they have been pouring cash on the ten-year-old after his third place finish in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham earlier this month.

That inadequate 3m2f race was being used as a warm-up for his National defence.

And punters think they have seen enough to suggest he won’t be beaten on Saturday, April 13.

He is now clear market leader after being backed right in from 14-1, ahead of Willie Mullins’ 8-1 second-favourite I Am Maximus.

But bookies William Hill report one-way traffic in the betting – and so much so that they think it will be their biggest ante-post loser for more than 20 years.

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “Corach Rambler’s run in the Gold Cup looked a perfect prep for his defence of the Grand National, and our customers agree as he has been absolutely hammered in the betting since the run at Cheltenham.

“He wasn’t a bad result prior to that, but the weight of money in the last couple of weeks has been so significant that he’d be the worst ante-post result this century.

“At this stage, we would take anything to beat him, but the way the money is going suggests he’s going to be incredibly hard to beat.”

Bookies think Corach Rambler is currently on track to be a ‘significantly worse’ result than two mega popular previous winners.

Tiger Roll was sent off 4-1 fav for the second of his two National wins in 2019.

While AP McCoy’s sole National triumph on Don’t Push It in 2010 saw him sent off 10-1 joint-favourite.
