Ravens Give Intriguing Injury Update on $98 Million Pro Bowler

One of the worst sports cliches that gets rolled out every NFL season is something along the lines of no team’s year depends on just 1 player — like you can’t win or lose because of 1 guy.

Ok, whatever. Maybe. Sure. There are 11 guys on the field. It makes sense.

What might be more accurate — and practical — is that you can actually win or lose games because of 2 or 3 guys, and in the case of the Baltimore Ravens, we know 1 of those players is NFL All-Pro and 2-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike.

We saw what can happen with the Ravens without Madubuike in 2025, when they entered the season as Super Bowl contenders but stumbled to an 8-9 finish and missed the playoffs.

That the Ravens only had Madubuike for 2 games seems to indicate he’s 1 of the players that the season can turn on, and it’s left an entire fanbase hoping he can return from a severe neck injury in 2026.

Newest Update on Madubuike to Kick Off OTAs

With the Ravens staying tight-lipped about where Madubuike is in his recovery, we got a little glimpse into what might be going on behind the scenes with offseason workouts starting this week.

“I can’t speak in terms of exact attendance,” Ravens Strength & Conditioning Coach Scott Elliott said on Wednesday. “But I will tell you that (Madubuike) is working his tail off. As I’m sure you’ve seen online, he is in great shape … with (Madubuike) throughout the last year, it’s been constant communication, and I’m just excited to see where it goes.”

That Elliott said all that with a huge smile plastered on his face shouldn’t be left out — and seems to favor Ravens getting back 1 of the NFL’s best interior defensive linemen.

Ravens Made Massive Investment in Madubuike

Madubuike, 6-foot-3 and 305 pounds, left a massive hole in the middle of the defense after his injury, in terms of both talent and salary.

The Ravens, rightfully so, made Madubuike 1 of the highest-paid defensive players in the NFL with a 4-year, $98 million contract extension in March 2024.

The next 2 seasons Madubuike accounts for massive salary cap hits — $29.8 million in 2026 and $30.3 million in 2027. That’s a lot of money for someone no one knows for sure is even going to play football this year.

Defensive-Minded New Head Coach in Jesse Minter

If and when Madubuike does return, he’ll be coming back to a whole new franchise look — 1 that includes a new head coach in former Ravens defensive assistant Jesse Minter and a new defensive coordinator in former Ravens defensive lineman Anthony Weaver.

ESPN’s Jamison Hensley listed the interior defensive line among the Top 3 needs for the Ravens ahead of the draft and following free agency.

“At defensive tackle, there has been growing optimism that two-time Pro Bowl player Nnamdi Madubuike will return from his neck injury,” Hensley wrote.

“I’m hearing that retirement is not in the cards for Nnamdi Madubuike and there’s a realistic expectation he will be back in a Ravens uniform this fall,” Ravens Vault’s Bobby Trossett wrote on his official X account on February 27.
