Victor Wembanyama Gets Real on Spurs’ Change for NBA Playoffs

With the San Antonio Spurs set to have a playoff run in 2026, it will mark the first time that Victor Wembanyama is competing in the postseason.

Seeing as though he’s the top player on the thriving Spurs, Wembanyama is bracing for increased minutes as rest is hard to come by with each game holding a ton of weight.

Just to confirm what seems obvious, reporters asked Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson if Wembanyama’s minutes will go up in the playoffs. As expected, the head coach made it clear that it will be the case.

Following a tight loss against the Denver Nuggets over the weekend, Wembanyama addressed his incoming increase in workload.

“I’m ready for anything,” the star center told reporters. “Right now, I’m really focused on recovering and making sure my body is ready every game. So, I’m totally ok.”

The 22-year-old was an NBA superstar before he ever suited up for the Spurs. Playing for Metropolitans 92 in Paris, Wembanyama was the league’s top prospect before the 2023 NBA Draft.

Now that he’s three years in, Wembanyama has lived up to the hype. He’s got the Rookie of the Year nod, he’s been voted All-Defensive, a second All-Star nod was collected this year, and an MVP finalist is likely in his future.

All of the individual awards can speak to how dominant Wembanyama has been. But the Spurs are ready to see him reach a new level in the playoffs, after the Spurs missed the cut over the past two seasons.

The Spurs are heading into a Monday night matchup (April 6) against the Philadelphia 76ers as the Western Conference’s second seed.

Currently, the Spurs hold a 59-19 record. After a loss against the Denver Nuggets, the Spurs dropped down to a 3.0-game deficit behind the Oklahoma City Thunder.

A top-two seed is guaranteed at this point. Therefore, it will take some time before the Spurs find out their first-round opponent, as the NBA Play-In Tournament will decide the final results.

The Play-In picture currently includes the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, and the Golden State Warriors.
