Both players appeared to struggle throughout, but Aspinall missed several chances to pile the pressure on his opponent.

After missing the chance to go 5-4, the Stockport-born star approached the board with his fist raised.

Smith then went on to secure the win, subsequently progressing to the semi-finals to face Luke Humphries.

Fans took to social media to react, with one person writing: “Smith gave him the match on a platter and Aspinall made a mess of it.”

While another commented: “Just one of them nights for the Asp.”

Elsewhere, Luke Littler defeated Peter Wright to make it to the final four, while Michael van Gerwen saw off competition from Gerwyn Price.

MVG dominated Littler in the first of two semi-finals, winning 5-1 at the First Direct Arena.

The Dutchman progressed to the final where he faced Humphries, who beat Smith 6-1 in the penultimate match of the evening.
