After trying to play through the rain, the umpires gave up. Before the start of the second inning, they called for the tarp.
The White Sox’ series finale against the Guardians Sunday at Rate Field is being delayed by rain, raising the question of whether it should’ve started at all. Storms to the north canceled the Bears’ training-camp practice, which was open to the public. They made their way south, first as a steady rain through which the umpires kept play moving, then as a gusher that brought out the tarp.
Before then, Sox starter Davis Martin had another rough first inning, allowing two runs (one earned). Guardians leadoff man Steven Kwan extended his on-base streak to 25 games with a single. After advancing to second on Chase DeLauter’s walk, Kwan reached third on Jose Ramirez’s single and scored on Sox right fielder Braden Montgomery’s fielding error. DeLauter then scored on Nathaniel Lowe’s sacrifice fly.
The Sox got one back against Joey Cantillo, but it should’ve been more. Brenton Doyle led off with a single, stole second and scored on Munetaka Murakami’s double. Miguel Vargas dropped a double in front of a diving DeLauter in right field, but Murakami had to hold and stopped at third. Cantillo then struck out Randal Grichuk, Montgomery and Colson Montgomery.
