Officer fires at vehicle during large overnight gathering in Grant Park

A Chicago police officer fired at a vehicle during a large gathering early Sunday in Grant Park, police said.

Officers responded to a call of a large gathering at about 3:02 a.m. along the 300 block of East Balbo Drive and deployed a tire deflation device, police said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability tweeted Sunday morning that investigators were responding to an officer-involved shooting in the 700 block of South Columbus Drive.

Police said a black sedan in a group of vehicles traveling at a high speed drove around the device toward an officer.

The officer fired their gun, striking the vehicle. No one inside the vehicle was hit, according to police.

The officer suffered an ankle injury and was treated and released from the hospital, police said.

The driver of the vehicle was later taken into custody. No other injuries were reported, according to police.

The Investigative Response Team is investigating.
