Tuesday’s first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal pitted the Spanish giant Real Madrid against the German behemoth Bayern Munich.
What fans got was a showdown worthy of a Champions League final. When everything was said and done, Real Madrid was on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision.
Luis Dias and Harry Kane were the executioners on the night for the German side. Diaz and Kane struck five minutes apart towards the tail end of the first half and the beginning of the second half.
Diaz exploited a critical mistake by Brazilian defender Vinicius in the Real Madrid line, sneaking past and burying the pass for a 1-0 lead.
The Madrid players quickly motioned for an offside call, but there would be none. The opening tally came at the 41st minute and put the Spanish squad in trouble.
Diaz’s goal clearly rattled Real Madrid, as English striker Harry Kane delivered what would end up becoming the knockout blow:
The goal came right off the opening kickoff, with Kane delivering a blast from right outside the box. The shot off his right boot beat Andriy Lunin. The game was 2-0 at that point, and made it seem like Real Madrid was on the ropes.
To their credit, Alvaro Arbeloa’s side settled down and took control of the play. That eventually led to the Spanish side cutting the lead in half, courtesy of Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe tapped home the pass on the back door to make it a one-goal game. Unfortunately for the faithful at Santiago Bernabeu, that would be it for the match. When the final whistle sounded, Bayern Munich walked off the pitch with a crucial victory.
Neuer Comes Up Big When It Mattered Most
Manuel Neuer, who has a reputation for coming up big in big games, delivered when it mattered most. The Bayern keeper stymied Real Madrid on several occasions, racking up a total of nine saves on the night.
The veteran netminder rightfully earned the Man of the Match honors, thanks to saves such as this one:
Neuer’s right hand prevented Mbappe from getting another tally, and, most importantly, preserved Bayern’s victory.
The Bundesliga titans will need Neuer at his best in the second leg against Los Blancos. Real Madrid will likely come out with everything they’ve got, especially since they’ve got a massive chip on their shoulder.

Real Madrid Must Win on the Road in Second Leg
The stakes are now higher for Real Madrid if they are to advance to the semi-final of this year’s Champions League. The rematch will come on April 15 at Allianz Arena in Munich. Los Blancos will have a devil of a time turning things around as they face a 2-1 deficit. Even one goal at home by the Bundesliga champions would make it virtually impossible for the Spanish squad to get back into the series.
But there will be additional motivation. Real Madrid will be looking to offer some payback for their home defeat. The Spanish juggernaut would like nothing more than to return the favor with a win on the road.
