Services announced for veteran Chicago firefighter who died during training exercise in West Ridge

Services have been announced for veteran Chicago Firefighter Steven M. Decker, who died last week during training, officials said.

Visitation for Steven M. Decker, 61, will be held Thursday from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Homes of Chicago, 6250 N. Milwaukee Ave., fire officials said.

Decker’s funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church 5650 N. Canfield Ave. in Chicago.

Decker was injured Thursday afternoon during a training exercise in the 6600 block of North Kedzie Avenue and was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, Chicago Fire Department officials said.

Decker had been with the Chicago Fire Department for nearly 30 years and was an engineer on Engine Company 71, according to Chicago Fire Fighters Union Local 2. That company is stationed at 6239 N. California Ave. in West Ridge.

Engine Company 71 is located in the 50th Ward, which is also where the training exercise was being conducted. That ward is represented by Ald. Debra Silverstein, who offered her “deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and fellow first responders” in a statement on social media.
