Seven beluga whales were expected to leave Marineland Canada Monday, a little less than two weeks after four arrived at Shedd Aquarium from the shuttered aquatic park.
All seven belugas are headed for SeaWorld in San Antonio, said Andrew Burns, a longtime advisor and lawyer for Marineland. A group of four U.S. and one Spanish aquarium, including Shedd, has agreed to take all 30 Marineland belugas, and the plan is to ship them all out by Aug. 31.
“The water gets lowered, then everybody prepares for the move and then they get picked up and moved,” Burns said Monday.
As many as six more could be on their way to Shedd. Burns had no information Monday about when those whales might be set to leave Marineland.
“We’re confirming that over the next little while,” he said.
Johnny Ford, a Shedd spokesman, said: “Details and timelines for additional rescues are expected to shift based on the needs of the animals and will not be shared in advance with the public, to ensure the safety of the animals and the people involved.”
Four belugas, all females, arrived at Shedd July 21 from Marineland, and Shedd officials have said they are settling in well.
Marineland, located in Niagara Falls, Ontario, has been closed to the public since 2024. The financially strapped park had threatened to euthanize its 30 belugas if new homes couldn’t be found. Burns told the Sun-Times last month that the belugas were at “imminent risk” of being euthanized.
If the seven belugas leave Monday as expected, 17 more will remain at Marineland.
