President Donald Trump will return to the Chicago area next month to serve as the honorary chairman at the Presidents Cup golf tournament in the western suburbs.
PGA TOUR, the tournament’s organizer, confirmed in a news release that Trump will attend the event happening Sept. 22-27 at the Medinah Country Club. The tournament includes 24 of the world’s top golfers — 12 from the U.S. versus 12 golfers from around the world, excluding Europe.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said he was honored to be selected as the chairman for the tournament. It will be his first public appearance in the Chicago area since his reelection.
“This will be a particularly exciting event. Both teams are ‘loaded’ with Talent. I look forward to being there, and greeting all of these fantastic athletes, on both teams!” he wrote. “See you in Chicago!”
It’s the second time Trump has served as chairman at the tournament; he held the role during the 2017 Presidents Cup in New Jersey, according to PGA.
“The Presidents Cup has a proud tradition of engaging world leaders from across the globe and across political lines, and President Trump’s involvement continues that legacy,” PGA TOUR CEO Brian Rolapp said in a statement. “His participation will help elevate the event on the international stage while furthering our mission of bringing people together through the game of golf.”
Past Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama and George Bush also served as the tournament’s honorary chairmen, according to PGA.
Ahead of his reelection in 2024, Trump appeared publicly in Chicago twice. The National Association of Black Journalists hosted him at the organization’s annual conference in July 2024, a decision that drew internal and external backlash for NABJ. Trump appeared before a friendlier crowd in October 2024 at The Economic Club of Chicago to discuss his plan to impose broad tariffs during his second term.
